If possible, one would like to use an inn or lodge in proximity to the base of one’s activity the day before so that he/she can start climbing or hiking early in the morning.
On the other hand, on the way back from such activity, one would like to soak slowly in an Onsen. Fortunately, there are many Onsen in the mountains of The Japan Alps, and you should be able to enjoy your quiet surroundings and delicious meals that normally you would be unable to experience at accommodations. A day trip is good, but if you can spend a relaxing time the night before your activity or the day after, you will feel more refreshed.
