Mt. Kaikoma-gatake | THE JAPAN ALPS

Mt. Kaikoma-gatake, the main peak of the Kaikoma Mountains is located at the northwest of Yamanashi prefecture. Trails to the mountain, known from the past as a place for mountain worship, had been developed from various directions but mainly from the Nirasaki area. The local folks call Mt. Kaikoma-gatake Mt. Higashi-East-Koma-gatake, whereas people call Mt. Kisokoma-gatake, the main peak of the Central Japanese Alps, as Mt. Nishi West-Koma-gatake. It is also called Mt. Shiro-white Kuzure-san due to the white color of the granite. The view from the summit is fantastic. The shape of the mountains can be admired from Chuou- high way or JR Chuou railway. The Kaikoma Mountains consists of Mt. Nokogiri-dake, Mt. Kaikoma-gatake, Hayakawa o’ne, Mt.Houou three mountains, and Yashajin pass and the altitude is about 2,700m to 2,800m. There are a few different approaches to the summit. The shortest approach starts from Kitazawa pass, the longest from Kuroto o’ne, and a ridgeline walk from Houou three mountains. For experts, a route from Mt. Nokogiri-dake, the challenging rocky ridgeline walk, is popular.

Mt. Kaikoma-gatake: Elevation 2,967m

There are some mountains, which include Koama-gatake in their names in Japan. Mt. Kai-Koma-gatake is the best example. It can be said that this mountain represents all of Koma-gatake mountains in Japan. A basic course is the one from Kitazawa pass. Also another approach from Kuroto o’ne, which
starts from Chikuu-Komagatake shrine is popular for hikers who like to enjoy slow hiking on Mt. Koama-gatake.
An approach from Kitazawa pass and the one from Kuroto o’ne will be introduced here. Mt. Kaikoma-gatake shows you a different view every time you hike it. These two routes introduced here have different tastes so you will have many new discoveries for both courses. The route from Houou three mountains hikes from one mountain to another, showing you a core part of the Southern Japan Alps.
